hot wheels
Pratt student work
For a product design class, we were tasked with upgrading an existing vacuum form package. Through research and conversations with collectors, I chose Hot Wheels and learned that it’s a brand enjoyed by people of all ages not just kids.

Hot Wheels is currently packaged in a blister package. The blister packaging doesn’t allow collectors to display the car without opening it, which lowers its value. Their competitors are doing the same.
My design reimagines Hot Wheels packaging as a display-ready case, allowing collectors to showcase their cars while preserving their value.

decision: car clam
-
the car clam gives collectors a 360 view of the car
-
they can open and close the case to store/display the car or to play with the car
-
the cases stack on top of each other

process

To get started I made a 3D clam shell for the Hot Wheel car.
Once the clam was 3D printed I used the Mayku pressure former to create the plastic parts.

After the plastic was cooled I cut out the clam case.

art

I redesigned the cardboard backing of the current blister pack to become a collectors card for the car.

The art on the blister pack should feel exciting and unique to the car.
